Boeing has officially retracted its request made to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) last year seeking an exemption from a safety standard for its 737 MAX 7, currently undergoing certification.

Senator Tammy Duckworth, chairing an aviation subcommittee, voiced her opposition to Boeing’s exemption request last week, citing concerns about premature clearance for the 737 MAX 7’s commercial service. She highlighted the specific exemption related to an anti-ice system that poses risks of overheating and potential engine nacelle detachment, posing a threat to passengers seated behind the wing.

In response to the growing scrutiny, Boeing announced on Monday its decision to withdraw the exemption request. The company assured that it remains confident in the safety protocols associated with the proposed exemption but has opted instead to implement an engineering solution within the certification process.

The FAA declined to comment, deferring to Boeing’s statement regarding the matter.
