Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent, Says Victor Hugo. If music be the food of love, play on, Give me excess of it, that surfeiting, The appetite may sicken, and so die, said William Shakespeare, in Twelfth Night. Thus Music Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.
The World Music Day is celebrated annually on June 21 and has turned into a worldwide phenomenon as countries around the world enjoy the day in their own way.The day is also referred to as Fete de la Musique was a music festival began in France in 1982. French Minister of Culture Jack Lang conceived the concept in 1981. Since then the day has been celebrated each year as the World Music Day.
Ever since 1982, June 21 has become a worldwide phenomenon with over 32 countries all over the world. Normally, the World Music Day features amateur and professional musicians performing on the streets, in squares, or in public places. Larger bands usually throw a free gig and invite cross-genre musicians to share the stage with them. Sidewalks, parks, community gardens, stores and more become imprompt musical stages for both amateur and professional musicians to showcase their talents. All concerts and performances are free and open to the public.
“We are talking of World Music Day but look at the condition of music and musicians in todays times. What we see being promoted is only one form of music and it drowns out some of the finest talent we have around”, says classical vocalist Shubha Mudgal.”This does not bode well for the rich, diverse regional, folk and classical traditions which have come down to us down the ages.” Mudgal admits she cannot imagine life without music. “It has enriched me in so many ways that I can scarcely think of what life will be without music.”
The day also promotes peace and spread goodwill through music. Some of the countries that celebrate World Music Day are: Argentina, Australia, Britain, China, Costa Rica, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, India, Lebanon and many others. Music can change the world because it can change people. Music and sound can make human voice or instrument which can cause emotional experience.
Appreciating and liking are two completely different things. We need to listen to all sorts of music, even if some of it might not be our absolute favorite.Music reaches far into the past and during this time they develop different styles and genres of music, which is still listening. All styles and genres of music, one thing is common, and that is to make people happy. Today, music has increasingly spreading and people can not live without music.
