Nagapattinam: A 37-year-old farmer pronounced dead by doctors of the Sirkazhi government hospital, woke up moments before being put on the funeral pyre, asking for a glass of water. However, the joy of seeing the sole breadwinner coming alive turned out to be short lived for the family members, as he died soon afterwards.
The incident triggered a protest on Saturday night by the relatives of the deceased, who sought action against the doctors, whose negligence cost the 37-year-old farmer his life.
According to sources, Thangamani (37), a resident of Melavaravakkudi in Sirkazhi taluk, collapsed after complaining of chest pain while working on his farm on Saturday evening. Though he was rushed to the Sirkazhi government hospital, the doctors pronounced him dead. The body was taken back home by the family, who decided against a post-mortem.
While the family members were preparing for the final rites, Thangamani reportedly woke up asking for a glass of water. The man complained of uneasiness and the stunned family members took him to the Sirkazhi GH, where the doctors again pronounced him dead.
Angered by the ineptitude of the doctors, the family members staged a protest in front of the hospital. On information, Sirkazhi officials held talks with the agitators and assured them of appropriate action.
Meanwhile, a relative said that had the doctors been alert in the first place and administered Thangamani proper care, he could have been saved.
