Mumbai: Former Australian cricketer Justin Langer has expressed interest in becoming the next head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, according to the news reports. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced they are accepting applications for the role, as Rahul Dravid’s tenure ends after the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Langer, currently the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is reportedly considering applying for the position after the World Cup. He is credited with reviving Australian cricket following the ball-tampering scandal in 2018 and led them to their first-ever T20 World Cup title in 2021.
“I am curious,” Langer told the Times of India. “I’ve never thought about it, but coaching the Indian team would be an extraordinary role. The talent in India is fascinating.”
The BCCI is evaluating applicants for the head coach position. The possibility of having a foreign coach, with Langer a potential candidate, has sparked discussion. Duncan Fletcher was the last overseas coach for the Indian team.
On Monday, the BCCI has invited applications for the position of Head Coach of the Senior Men’s Team. Interested candidates should submit their applications by 6 PM IST on May 27, said the press release.
According to the press release, the selection process will include a thorough review of applications, followed by personal interviews and assessments of shortlisted candidates.
