With his remarkable performance in the ICC World Cup 2023, New Zealand’s 23-year-old cricket sensation Rachin Ravindra has been creating waves in the cricketing world. Ravindra was born in Wellington, New Zealand, to Indian parents. His name pays homage to two of India’s greatest cricket players, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

Following a triumphant game against Sri Lanka, Ravindra paid a visit to his Bengaluru grandparents. He and his grandmother are shown in a touching video that has gone viral carrying out a ritual to ward off evil.

If you’ve grown up in a desi household, you’ll probably be familiar with this ritual of ‘nazar utarna‘ where a senior member of the family reads some mantras and does some hand gestures to ward off evil.

The video has received a ton of feedback and more than 365k views. The young cricket player’s bond with his Indian heritage won over many.

When Ravindra was five years old, he started playing cricket in Wellington. Every year, he would go to Bengaluru to play club cricket.

Ravindra has become the most prolific run scorer in the ongoing World Cup 2023, amassing 565 runs in 9 innings, including three hundreds and two fifties. His best World Cup score to date is an astounding 123 runs without out. These are impressive stats for any cricket player, but especially for a young player participating in his first World Cup.
