New Delhi: This could be called more than a silver lining for Indian Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt. After reports of his bronze being upgraded to silver at the London Olympics in 2012 earlier this week, Friday saw reports claiming that gold medallist Toghrul Asgarov of Azerbaijan too had tested positive for prohibited substances. This means Yogeshwar Dutt could get the gold medal!

According to the report, Asgarov of Azerbaijan, who won the gold medal in the men’s 60kg freestyle category at the 2012 London Games, has tested positive for consuming performance enhancing drugs.

With both the gold and silver medallists in 60kg category testing positive for banned substance, Yogeshwar, who had bagged a bronze medal in men’s 60kg freestyle in London, is in line to get a gold in case his sample comes out clean.

Earlier, a Russian agency had reported that the four-time world champion and two-time Olympic medallist Besik Kudukhov of Russia, who had died in a car crash in 2013 in southern Russia, was found to have used a banned substance in a test conducted by the WADA. The Haryana grappler had defeated Franklin Gomez of Puerto Rico, Masoud Esmaeilpour of Iran and Ri Jong-myong of North Korea in the repechage rounds to claim bronze at the 2012 Olympics.

World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is yet to officially communicate the news of Asgarov’s testing positive to the world body, United World Wrestling (UWW).

In fact, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is still awaiting official news on Yogeshwar’s silver medal upgradation also with UWW yet to confirm the development, as Yogeshawar’s sample is also being tested.

While there was no official confirmation of any such development, with even the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) claiming to have no information about it, reports suggested Yogeshwar could be India’s second individual gold medallist after Abhinav Bindra. However, it may not be so easy even if Asgarov does test positive.

For one, there is no precedent of both finalists in wrestling testing positive and so the IOC and the United World Wrestling, the world body, would have to decide on the future course. Also, Asgarov had defeated the other bronze medallist, USA’s Coleman Scott, in the semifinal en route his gold. In which case, according to repechage rules in wrestling, it would be Scott who would get the first right to be upgraded. The same rule was followed in the case of Yogeshwar, who had lost to silver medallist, the late Besik Kudukhov of Russia, before winning bronze.
