Shaheed Diwas, also known as Martyr’s Day, is observed to honour the nation’s martyrs. On this day in 1931, the British executed freedom fighter Bhagat Singh along with his associates Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar.
To avenge the assassination of the nationalist leader Lala Lajpat Rai, Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru planned to murder Lahore Police Superintendent James Scott on December 28. After they accidentally shot John Saunders, Singh fled to Calcutta to avoid capture.
He was detained following his second attempt to overthrow the British government, during which he and Batukeshwar Dutt detonated bombs inside Delhi’s Central Assembly Hall while chanting “Inquilab Zindabad!” The three freedom fighters Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, were hung on March 23, 1931. Bhagat Singh joined the independence movement at an early age and was only 23 when he was executed by the British.
#BhagatSingh, #Sukhdev, #Rajguru and #Shaheed Diwas are trending on Twitter.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote, “Remembering #BhagatSingh, Sukhdev & Rajguru on this #ShaheedDiwas is a political act as their revolutionary legacy is being appropriated by communal elements who had no stake in our freedom struggle. Progressive forces should unite to realise their dream of an egalitarian India.”
“With their indomitable spirit & desire for freedom, the valiant trio of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev & Rajguru galvanised youth of Bharat to rise up against colonial British Raj. On their punyatithi, commemorated as #ShaheedDiwas, I pay my homage to the freedom heroes,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma tweeted.
Remembering the indelible sacrifice of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev & Rajguru on this Martyrs’ Day. My Pranam to these brave sons of India! Jai Hind!, tweeted Devendra Fadnavis.
