Madikeri: A high school in Hakattur village stands tall and challenges most modern schools both in aided and private sector category with good infrastructure, academic excellence and plans for futuristic development, all due to the contribution from the villagers and well wishers.

The school which began 35 years ago in a small village, today has smart boards, live streaming of DSERT educational programs through edusat and co-scholastic activities to make students self reliant. The school has an exclusive auditorium to host cultural events which gives an opportunity for the young students to showcase individual as well as collective talent. The school has excelled with 98.21 percent results and is rated as the best government school in the district.

During early stages, the school did not have adequate classrooms. During those years, Dwaraka coffee estate owner and an advocate P. Narayana donated 3 acre land to mark the beginning of its growth which was followed by Buttiyanda Kaveri Thimmaiah who donated 36 cents land towards the school’s development. Later with financial support from the government and by the collective efforts of the villagers, SDMC members, old students, elected representatives, department officials and teachers, the school’s ascendency in growth terms began.

Every year the school organizes new programs like writer’s fest, reader’s fest, children’s fair, flower show, cooking competition, teacher’s fest, exam fest and dinner fests, all in a unique manner. Shakthi Foundation (Madikeri), Rotary Misty hills (Madikeri), Mathanda Cariappa (Indane Gas distributor Madikeri), Mallangada Kusum Nehru (President, Comfort Foundation , Bengaluru), Sripathi Hebbar (Aravathoklu Estate), MS Thimmaiah ( Biligeri) and Dambekodi Leelavathi Chinnappa (Madikeri) are a few among the prominent donors today who contribute towards the all round development of children in this village school.

The donors bear the expenses of school students studying first year in pre-university colleges. Ten school students have received computers from the State government for securing highest marks at district level which by itself reflects the school’s academic excellence.

Drinking water supply, separate wash room for boys and girls, play grounds, kitchen to serve meals and well equipped library make up for the infrastructure in the school. The school received green school award for two consecutive years and a special green school award during the year 2015-16 from Wonderla foundation, Bengaluru.

The noteworthy contribution by villagers and well-wishers to go along with excellent academic performance makes Hakattur government high school standout in a remote village of Kodagu district which many consider as a momentous achievement against odds.
