Udupi: The coastal belt of Karnataka has witnessed several episodes of communal violence. However, amidst thick clouds of communal hatred, mutual distrust and suspicion, there are little stars of hope that shine brightly.
Nestled in Kundapura taluk, Kandlooru village, which was once notorious for communal unrest is now a beautiful example of peace and communal understanding.
Here in Kandlooru of Kavradi village, Hindus celebrate a festival dedicated to Goddess Mariamma and a whole lot of joy and gaiety is brought in by Muslim brethren who become a part of the celebration.
Kandlooru is the place where river Khubja and Varahi meet, but today it is the place where Hindus and Muslims come together keeping aside all their differences.
Legend has it that Goddess Durga killed demon Kakasura here and freed the people from his clutches. Mother Durga is worshipped as Goddess Mariamma here.
The temple is situated in close proximity to the local mosque and every year the festival of Goddess Mari is celebrated by both Hindus and Muslims. The villagers, irrespective of their religion, worship Goddess Mariamma and seek her benevolence to shield the village and the villagers from all kinds of hardships.
The festivity begins with carving out an idol of the goddess from a particular tree, which is worshipped for a month. All the rituals are performed by people from both communities.
The local mosque organises beverages and eatables for the devotees during the festival.
The village stands tall due to the love and respect that the people from two religions have nurtured for one another.
