Karkala: Water from Baje dam is pumped to entire Udupi city, but how many know that it is river Swarna that flows on its course to reach Baje and most importantly how many know of the dirt and filth that river Swarna carries in her womb from Karkala as she continues on her journey to Baje.
Sad, but true, the river which is the lifeline of Udupi and Karkala region is left in state of neglect in Karkala.
A glance at the river from Thellaru bridge will speak volumes on the condition of the river and the way locals have been abusing this precious river. The sight will make the very thought of drinking this water repulsive.
From ‘Pinda pradhana’ ceremony (annual ritual performed for the dead) to commodities hinting at black magic from waste to plastics, river Swarna has been smothered in squalor. A heap of earthen pots lying under the bridge hint that possible black magic rituals have been performed here. These pots are also used during the ‘pinda pradhana’ ritual that is widely performed here.
This bridge is located close to Karkala TMC and Durga village. Since there is no proper waste disposal mechanism in place in Durga village, it is believed that the waste is dumped into the river.
All of this filth, during the rainy season flows with the river and lands at Baje. During the course of the flow, these plastic bags carrying garbage get stuck on plants and trees too.
Unfortunately, the behaviour of people has brought black mark on the glorious accomplishment of the Karkala Town Municipal Council, which has won national award under Nirmal Gram Awards.
One may have to only wait and watch as to what action the TMC would take to restore the beauty of Swarna.
