Homeless Kalyani craves for help

Leading her life independently is the only thing Kalyani (68) knew, after the loss of her husband at a very young age and with the responsibility of her daughter. She lived her life with dignity and also got her daughter married off by means of whatever little she had.

Kalyani,  a resident of Shivanagar at Kodekal had lived happily until July this year, when destiny turned against her as a tragedy struck. On a fateful rainy day her house at Shivanagar collapsed. The several trees surrounding her house also made matters worse. The roofs of her house are broken, the walls crumpled and the whole house is falling apart.

Adding to her trouble, the city corporation  has also snapped  water connection to her house. The financial position of the Kalyani is such that she has nothing left now. She is a daily wage worker and survives on arecanut farming, her age is a criteria yet she is left with no option but to work. There is no family support and her daughter has also abandoned her.

In a generation where people do not even care for their own relatives; her neighbour’s (who are also financially weak) have been kind enough to allow her stay. Currently she resides in a neighbour’s house, but she does not want to be a liability on someone. Thus all she needs is a roof over her head.

Speaking to Newskarnataka, she says that she wants nothing apart from a house to live in. It was her hard earned money that she had invested over the years, but now at such an age she is devastated.

Kalyani who is a senior citizen and a widow, is eligible for the “Innovative Housing schemes” which was initiated in the month of March this year; the State government had announced that it  would distribute houses to inferior sections of the society including widows.

She can also apply for Bhagya Jyothi scheme, under which electricity connections are provided to BPL households, as well as the Kutir Jyoti program which envisages  extending single point light connections to households of rural BPL families that will include  SC ST families. But there has been no one to help her avail benefits of these schemes.

Moreover she has also written a letter requesting help to the Tahsildar, to the MCC and the Deputy Commissioner  but of no avail. In the month of August Mangalore south MLA JR Lobo had also promised her help but nothing has been done till now.

It is also learnt that the local- cooperator of Shivanagar at Kodikal, Prakash B had visited the house and assured to help her under few schemes but these initiations also failed as her daughter had no concern besides which Kalyani could not  produce documents to apply for the schemes.

We appeal our readers to help Kalyani give a new lease of life  through financial assistance or support in any way possible. The estimated cost to repair her house is Rs 1.5 lakh. Your assistance will be duly gratified.
