Mysuru: After a new born baby in plastic bag found discarded near Mysore city corporation dustbin, the child protection department has woken up and is working on plans to take some measures to give a new lease of life to dying infants.

With increase in the number of cases where new born infants are left behind and thrown during dark hours, it has become imperative to give ‘new life’ to the new born babies.

To begin with, the Child Welfare Committee intends to place cradles at prime locations like maternity hospitals in the city. These cradles can be used to place the unwanted new born babies. Later one can call child helpline numbers 1098 and 0824-2543003. CWC Officer Padma, Initially cradles will be places at Tulsidasa maternity hospital near Ballal circle, Jayalaxmipuram government maternity hospital, Nagamma maternity hospital, Nazarbad and Cheluvamba hospital.

What next?

The infants will then be shifted to Bapuji orphanage located in Vijayanagar. Later they will be moved to child adoption centres in Mandya nd Melukote where parents who intend to adopt the children can approach and help in giving a new lease of life to once discarded child.

Smart cradles too

At Bapuji children home in Gokulam 3rd phase 4th cross a smart cradle is available where the unwanted child can be placed. Within five minutes after keeping the child in the cradle an alarm bell will ring and thereafter child care volunteers will act to give adequate care to the new born. The contact mobile number is 9483064578.

In addition regular meeting will be held at Siddhartha Nagar girls school Balamandir between 10 am and 2pm on every Wednesday and Saturday where the unwanted children can be handed over in person. The department is also on the lookout for organisations and NGO’s involved in child care and adoption with adequate infrastructure. They too can contact 0821-2543003 for collecting applications to enroll and serve the helpless and deprived infants.

Root of the problem

The problem develops when innocent girls are lured into relationships which result in pregnancy. Later the girls are left alone, who in order to escape societal bashing resort to methods like abortion, premature delivery and discarding new born babies. Pregnancy termination procedure is carried out within the four walls which may be known or unknown to close relatives. Live in relationships and fissures in marital relationships adds up to the problem.

Who cares!

Many little infants disappear before entering this world where the journey from womb with no stopovers in between heads to tomb. Some new born babies face the most hostile conditions (difficult to imagine too)and may become prey for animals on hunt or when deprived of basic needs after birth may only look for the outstretched arms of Samaritans who could place them on a pyre on in a tomb. Some fortunate one’s escape the ‘horror’ (like the one rescued by the pourakarmikas ) and enter child protection centre.

But no place on earth can substitute the real mother’s lap and her bosom which they are deprived of for no fault of theirs!
