Gravity: Space between life and death

Space is still a concept that never fails to amaze mankind and many Hollywood films have attempted to capture this universal wonder. Even though our understanding of space and the world beyond is derived from such movies, the unending curiosity to know more brings us back to the silver screen, hoping to solve the unanswered questions.

Starting from Academy Award Gravity (2013), directed by Alfonso Cuarón, won Best Picture in 2014. It also won several accolades following the year. These include Best Original Score, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design and so on. To be honest, the film deserves all the above-mentioned awards.

I have always been a huge fan of Sandra Bullock, and I knew right away that her character in this film would win the hearts of millions around the world. And I was not mistaken, as she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, adding to her already remarkable list of achievements. I must also say that the film would not have received as many awards if George Clooney had not starred in it.

In the film, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney appear as new astronauts Dr. Ryan Stone and Matt Kowalsky, who work on the Hubble Space Telescope are brutally disrupted by a catastrophic debris collision. They’re cut off from ground communications and drifting through space, and their only hope is to make it to the International Space Station before Stone’s supply of oxygen runs out.

The film then depicts the struggles and attempts these two people have to make in order to return to Earth safely. The dilemma the characters have to go through leaves them with choices that would even cost their life. Gravity’s concluding sequence suggests a massive cosmic rebirth, as if these characters are the first or last humans in the universe.

Etched beautifully by the director, each sequence takes viewers to an outer-space adventure and puts us in the character’s position, making us think what we would do in a life-or-death situation. This I believe is due to the characters’ performances, cinematography, visual effects, and all other aspects of the film.

Despite the fact that there are only a few characters, the film holds the audience’s attention till the very end. The visual effects enable one to witness what exactly outer space life feels like. I totally loved the use of cool colour tone and also the music incorporated which adds up to the existing tension within the film. This personally made me curious to know what is going to happen.

Hence, Gravity is not just any Sci-Fi film as the plot revolves around the general idea of  ‘fight for survival.’ The happenings in the film allow the characters to display both positive and negative qualities as it is what makes humanity such a powerful force. I must say that Gravity is one of those rare films that manages to be both perfect and entertaining. It indeed is a film that I would recommend everyone to watch.
