Mangalore: A patient has   accused a doctor of sexually assaulting her when she had been admitted to Yenepoya Hospital in Deralakatte, on Sunday February 9.

The accused has been identified as Dr Niyaz resident of Kannur pursuing his second year MD at the hospital.

According to the complaint filed by the girl at Ullal police station, she was sexually assaulted by Dr Niyaz, during the medical test. The girl had reportedly been admitted to the hospital for treatment of fever and cough.

Later, members of a few women’s organizations reportedly thrashed the accused doctor after which he was admitted to the same hospital.

The girl was sent for medical examination after a case was registered in Ullal police station. The accused doctor  has also lodged a  counter complaint against the woman for assaulting him.

The accused doctor has however  rubbished all the allegations. Dr Prakash Harishchandra of the hospital who too refuted the allegations against Dr Niyaz, in a letter to the vice-chancellor of Yenepoya University stated that Dr Niyaz had in fact tried to stop another person from recording a video of an outpatient, when a group of bystanders assaulted him.

The letter says, “Dr Niyaz, second-year resident post graduate (of Yenepoya Hospital) was assaulted by fellow bystanders in the respiratory medicine outpatient department during the course of the day.”

“Dr Niyaz was auscultating a female referral patient in the outpatient department, (when) he noticed an unrelated fellow bystander video recording the incident, to which he objected. This infuriated the bystanders leading to a physical assault on the physician. The incident was in presence of other medical staff and patients”, the letter added.

Moreover the letter also stated that “as per duties of a doctor, under oath, whenever you come to witness exploitation of a patient, it’s your legal duty to inform the law enforcement agency to necessitate action. Such a fine physician adhering to his principle of objecting wrong was subjected to physical violence and humiliated in our esteemed university. The affected individual lies in the SICU having performed his duty undergoing physical pain, mental suffering and having to nurse his wounded ego for years with a mental scar, which may not heal adequately. Where is the esteemed university heading to? The course of events has mandated measures to be taken to reinstall confidence among the students, residents, paramedical and non-teaching staff to provide a safe working environment.”
