Mangaluru: The word Guru has a long history dating back centuries. The name comes from the Sanskrit language, where “Gu” denotes darkness and “Ru” means light. With the help of their wisdom, they have lighted the darkness for us throughout life. The festival of Guru Purnima thus honours all academic and spiritual gurus or teachers for their dedication and selflessness.
Guru Purnima falls on the full moon day of the month of Ashadha, or Purnima Tithi. It is observed by Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists in India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
On this day, Gautam Buddha delivered his first sermon to his first five followers in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, following his enlightenment. However, Jains and Hindus also commemorate this day to honour their masters and teachers. Veda Vyasa, the writer of the holy book Mahabharata, was also born on Guru Purnima.
