Bengaluru: The BBMP demolition drive is taking a different turn with owners of buildings demolishing their own constrictions in order to avoid heavy machinery razing thorough their structures. When heavy rainfall wrecked havoc inundating low lying areas, BBMP went forward with the demolition drive to bring down unauthorized structures built on lake beds and major storm water drains. They wanted to remove all the unauthorized structures which violated specified construction norms. As the drive gained momentum many buildings were razed to the ground.
BBMP used large JCB’s and bulldozers for their operations to bring down unauthorized structures. Some buildings which encroached part the government land too were not spared and most of them were damaged during the demolition drive. In order to avoid the brunt of BBMP heavy machinery, owners on their own were found demolishing the parts of their building in the encroached area.
Government’s rigid stance on the issue has made matters worse as most owners who encroached upon drains and lake beds are left with no other option apart from demolishing the buildings they once constructed.
