Mysuru: A gruesome incident of a 68-year-old woman being allegedly assaulted and strangulated to death by another woman related to her has been reported from Ganigara Koppal in Bannur hobli, T. Narasipur taluk, on Thursday.

The unfortunate victim, who was also robbed of her gold chain by the alleged killer, has been identified as Kamalamma, who had three sons — an advocate, a lecturer and an agriculturist.

It is reported that Kamalamma, who left her home at about 6 pm to visit her relative Nagaveni, who runs Sri Dharmasthala Grameena Abhivrudhi Sangha in the village, to remit her weekly instalment, did not return home till about 10.30 pm following which her sons lodged a complaint with Bannur Police.

It is alleged that Nagaveni, who collected the weekly instalment from Kamalamma, assaulted the elderly woman before strangulating her with a wire and also robbed Kamalamma’s two-stringed gold chain.

It is alleged that Nagaveni, who stuffed the body of Kamalamma into a bag, tried to shift the body away on her two-wheeler and dump it elsewhere. But her efforts failed as the neighbourhood was densely populated.

After failing to shift Kamalamma’s body on her two-wheeler, Nagaveni allegedly dumped the body in drainage in front of her house and covered it with a bag.

Meanwhile, passersby, who noticed Kamalamma’s body lying in the drainage, immediately informed Police, who rushed to the spot and shifted the body to Bannur general hospital for post-mortem.

Additional SP Kala Krishnaswamy, Circle Inspector Mahesh Kumar, Bannur SI Raghavendra and staff, who reached the spot on information, took Nagaveni into custody for questioning.
