Mysuru: Every year, when the monsoon fails, weird traditions come to fore. One such traditions that have been performed is prayers to frogs!
The belief is that if frogs are worshiped, the drought situation will be overcome with a favourable rainfall.
In a remote village of Belavadi, on outskirts of Mysuru, people came together and lived this age old belief by performing prayers to a frog, hoping that their prayers would be heard.
It is said that since time immemorial prayers to frogs were a tool to appease the rain gods. Accordingly, this year when the region is seeing water scarcity, under the guidance of the seniors of the village, villagers resorted to praying a frog.
The frog caught from the village was placed on a wooden plank and the plank was placed on the head of the senior most person in the village. The man carrying the frog on head was made to walk through the village as villagers poured water on the frog from above. Finally, prayers were offered outside a temple here. The frog was later released to a lake nearby.
This was followed by mass meals for all the villagers.
The seniors of the village challenge that every time the frog is worshiped in the village, the rains have been favourable.
