Mysuru: “Our country has produced lot of Mathematicians and they have contributed their knowledge regarding mathematics for the betterment of society”, said Bishop of Mysore Diocese Dr Thomas Antony Vazhapilly.

He was speaking after inaugurating the UGC sponsored two day national seminar on ‘Recent Advances in Applied Mathematics’ (RAAM-2015) jointly organised by Departments of Mathematics and Physics at St. Philomena’s College, Bannimatap on Thursday.

“Without mathematics nothing is possible and our country stands first in producing good number of mathematicians like C V Raman and others. Our students are globally recognised in the field of mathematics and in Vedas they have given more importance for mathematics. Everything is related to mathematics in today’s life and without mathematics we cannot do anything”. he said

Speaking on the importance of Mathematics, he said, “More and more research is in process and for everything we need mathematics. In the current era the term applied mathematics is used in a broader sense. It includes the classical areas noted above as well as other areas that have become increasingly important in applications. Even fields such as number theory that are part of pure mathematics are now important in applications though they are not generally considered to be part of the field of applied mathematics. Sometimes, the term applied mathematics is used to distinguish between the traditional applied mathematics that developed alongside physics and the many areas of mathematics that are applicable to real world problems today”.

Chairman, DOS in Mathematics UOM Dr R Rangarajan, Chairman, Department of Mathematics, Indian Institute of Science Dr Govindan Rangarajan, Principal Fr Leslie Moras, Organising Secretary Vidhyadhar Sanjay Nair, Dean Rajalakshmi and Convenor A Thomas Gunaseelan were present.
