Mysuru: Economist and BJP leader M Subramanyam Swamy, on Wednesday, advocated a surgery for rapists rather than death sentence, as a stringent action against the growing crimes against women.
Addressing the gathering, during a talk on ‘India’s economy: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’, organised by Manthana Samsthe, at Jaganmohan Palace, here, Swamy said: “Women are held in high esteem in Indian culture. However, crimes against women are increasing in recent days, denting the prospects of the country on a global level”.
Swamy said: “I have collected the opinion of many people in this regard, who favoured surgery against death sentence. It is left to the people to guess which type of surgery”.
Though, Swamy chided the Nehru family and also former prime minister Manmohan Singh in his address, he chose the best of the words to eulogise another former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao.
Saying that PVN, as Narasimha Rao was popularly known as, should have got Bharat Ratna this year, Swamy said, though Manmohan Singh was the finance minister in Rao’s cabinet, it was due to the support of the PM that Singh could emerge as an able minister. “Singh was described as the champion of economic reforms. In reality, it was due to Rao, Singh could achieve that,” he said.
“If not today, Rao will get Bharat Ratna another day. He is also eligible for the Nobel honour”, asserted Swamy.
