Sand laden truck kills head constable, Police suspect sand mafia

Mysuru: A head constable was knocked down by a sand laden lorry on the ring road in Udayagiri police station limits here on Thursday afternoon January 8. The police suspect it to be foul play.

The sand mafia’s activities are at its peak in the city in the absence of legal trading of sand, though the incident of the head constable’s death seems like an accident, there may be foul play involved, said the police sources.

According to police, head constable 50-year-old Mahadev Swamy attached to the Udayagiri police station,  was riding a two wheeler, when he was knocked down by a sand laden lorry. the lorry driver’s fled the spot after the accident.

Mahadeva Swamy who was shifted to near by private hospital by passers-by succumbed to the injuries .

It is learnt that Mahadeva Swamy was on duty at a check post near Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) regional campus near Bannur junction on the Ring Road . A sand transporting truck which was heading towards city from Krishnarajanagara (KR Nagara) hit Mahadeva Swamy from behind at around 2 pm. Victim who sustained major injuries on head died in the evening.

Siddartha Nagar Traffic Police who rushed to the spot seized the vehicle which was left abandoned by the driver .Police has registered case of rash and negligent driving against the driver.

Meanwhile, city police commissioner M A Salim said though they are not suspecting any foul play in the incident as constables have no powers to check the vehicles on their own, they will know the truth only after a thorough investigation.
