Mysuru: Reena George who switched over from 400m to 100m proved successful as she managed to win gold in the 100m event in the 56th National inter-state senior athletics championships held at G.M.C. Balayogi Stadium.
22-year-old Reena from Mysuru who is very consistent in the competitions, took part again and proved her mettle in the national level competition by winning gold medal in the event which she was not so familiar about. A frequent knee injury prompted Reena to focus on the 100m event. With the guide and assistance from her present coach Sumanth, she started focusing on the 100m event. For the past four to five months, she underwent extensive practice.
Speaking to Newskarnataka Reena said, “Though the 100m event is not new for me, but still it’s not my regular event. Usually, I used to take part in the 400m event which is my regular event, but due to knee injury I started to concentrate on the 100m event. This was my first national event in the 100m category and I am delighted with the achievement. The credit also goes to my coach Sumanth, who came out with various techniques and exercises to make myself fit for the event. The exercise and techniques are same in the 400m and 100m event.
KP Sumanth, under whom Reena is undergoing training said, “I am watching her from many years, I knew her speed and strength and hence adviced her to concentrate on the 100m event. There was a lot of hard work behind her success. This is the first time she is taking part in the 100m event in a senior national athletic event and came out with a bang. She has the capacity to improve further and in days to come she will improve the timing further. She won the gold in the 100m event by clocking 11.99 sec. Her main event is 200m and 400m event in which she has won medals in not only in the State but also at national level competition. She also secured a bronze medal in the 200m event at All-India inter university competition.
K Suresh, Assistant Director, DYES, Mysuru was also elated with her performance. “She is a very hard working athlete and won many medals when she was a product of this hostel. Hope she comes out with more such achievements and brings more laurels to not only Mysuru but also the State and even the country,” he said.
