Mysuru: With an intention to treat visitors who come to police stations in a polite and disciplined way, all police stations across the city have been provided comprehensive a reception desk. The receptionists who also happen to be police personnel are given special training on how to handle visitors and will be directly reporting to commissioner’s office.
Speaking after inaugurating a one day workshop for the receptionists at different police stations across the city, Police Commissioner Dr. A S Subrahmanyeswara Rao said, “There was an allegation on police department that even after 70 years of independence, the 1861 Police Act which was formed by Britishers to preserve colonial power had not been amended and the police culture did not change. Even though CRPC was revised the police culture didn’t change, alleged people. Hence to negate that we have decided to set up comprehensive reception desks which will be the first contact for the visitors.” The workshop was held at V V Puram Traffic Police Station.
“We have come out with an innovative reception desk which would be appealing-even colour combination, scientific way of maintaining records and how to retrieve and so on. Earlier too, we had reception but the problem was that the receptionist belong to same police station and the station SHO or inspector were having control on them. Now here, we are eliminating that system. Across the city, a pool of officers have been collected and will be shuffled and after training they will be posted to different police stations. In each police station, we have handpicked three to four police personnel and training them”, added Sumbrahmanyeswara Rao. The receptionist will guide the visitors about whom to approach and what exactly they should do.
He also called upon the police personnel to take up training very seriously as they will be creating history and also called upon them to treat the visitors as their family members.
Madhu Kiran, who is having vast experience in imparting soft skills not only across the country but also in many foreign countries like Doha, Riyadh and Dubai said, “The visitors who come to police station are often scared of the cops in uniforms. So to make them more people friendly, the police who are in reception desk will not wear uniform and instead will be in civil dress.”
Vikram Amte, DCP (Traffic) said, “Across the city including traffic and women’s, there are 24 police stations across the city. To start with, eight police stations will have full-fledged reception desks. Gradually, in few days time, all the 24 police stations will have the help desks.” C V Ravi, Inspector, V V Puram Traffic Police Station also mentioned that every day at an average, 20 to 30 visitors visit the police station. On the occasion, reception desk at V V Puram Traffic Police station was also inaugurated.
