PG, PhD students protest against UoM – K S Rangappa

Mysuru: Hundreds of postgraduate and PhD students of the University of Mysore staged a protest alleging that against UoM vice-chancellor K S Rangappa and accused him of having aristocratic rules in the campus ever since he took charge of the varsity.

Moreover they boycotted the classes and gathered near the canteen. They also accussed the VC and Appaji Gowda. It is a conspiracy of Rangappa to snatch away higher education opportunity of SC/ST students,” they also alleged.

The pointed out that according to UGC (Minimum standards and procedure for awards of M.Phil/Ph.D degree) Regulation 2009, all universities, institutions, deemed universities and colleges of national importance shall admit MPhil doctoral students through an entrance test conducted at the level of the individual university. However, the University of Mysore has not made it mandatory, the informed.

UOM PhD 2010 Regulations say that candidates who qualified for UGC/CSIR JRF fellowships through UGC/CSIR NET examinations are exempted from the entrance test. Such candidates, who hold fellowships/scholarships, can apply directly to the registrar (evaluation) by obtaining a consent/acceptance letter from the guide. Students say that this is in violation of the UGC guidelines and want it rectified.

They pointed that even though there is a provision from University Grants Commission (UGC) to offer scholarship and other monetary help to students to take up competitive exams, it has not been extended to deserving students.

Alleging Ranagappa, they said that he is facing many cases of corruption in both Karnataka State Open University and Mysore University. Ranagappa has violated law, rules and regulation when he has appointed lecturers in both the Universities.

The students also said that, Prof Dr. B.P. Mahesh Chandra Guru had abused Lord Rama while delivering a lecture at a refresher course for faculty at University of Mysore’s UGC-Academic Staff College recently. Complaint has been registered a complaint against Prof Guru under IPC Section 295 (A) for hurting religious sentiments last week.
