Mysuru: The Ph.D entrance exam conducted by University of Mysore recently has a disappointing result. Only 346 of the total 2114 students who appeared for the entrance exam have managed to pass the examination. The pass percentage stand at a mere 16.14 percent. It can be brought to light that University of Mysore, a public state university in Karnataka, had invited applications from eligible candidates for PhD Entrance Exam 2017-18 on October 29. There were 948 PhD seats available in 51 various subjects.
The condition of eligibility was that the candidates should have secured at least 55% of aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST/Cat-1/A candidate who completed Master’s Degree prior to 19th Sep 1991) or equivalent grade under grading system, in their Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from the recognized Universities/Institutions. The PhD Entrance Test had two parts, Part A contained 50 Objective type questions of one Mark each; and Part B contained Essay type/short answer question for 50 marks.
Surprisingly most of the students have failed in Part B, which happens to be their subject. If this is the scenario and quality of our post graduate students who are coming out from the university, then there is a need to spare some time to think over the teaching methodology or system. The performance of the students of UoM is too dissatisfactory when it comes to KSET and NET.
