Chamarajanagara: In the Malai Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary in the Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district, the Forest Department achieved the successful capture of an elephant that had been causing havoc for the past 3-4 months on Friday night.
In the forest area near Geratte village, adjacent to the Katrikapapana area, the Forest Department successfully captured an elephant on Friday night with the assistance of trained elephants.
The Forest Department, along with a team of experienced elephants including 5 trained ones – Arjuna, Ashwatthama, Karna, and Bhima, as well as more than 100 personnel from various areas like Gegotte, Hithimati, Kushalanagara, and Balleshwara, participated in the operation.
For days, the local villagers had been urging the Forest Department to capture the elephant that was causing destruction in the area, and it was finally apprehended within a single day. The Forest Department is currently in the process of relocating the elephant to a different location.
The Forest Department officials involved in the operation include Dr. Ramesh, the Chief Veterinary Officer, and other experts. They had been striving to capture the elephant for a while, and their success is a relief to the area’s residents.
On January 8, the Chamarajanagar Conservator of Forests wrote to Chief Conservator of Forests Rajeev Rao, requesting permission to relocate the elephant to a designated camp. This request was made in response to longstanding demands from villagers to capture and relocate the elephant to a different location. Subsequently, an order dated June 23 was issued, permitting the capture and relocation of the elephant to the elephant camp. However, due to the unavailability of veterinary doctors, the Forest Department officials themselves initiated the operation, which ultimately led to the successful capture of the elephant. This move has brought relief to the villages in this region.
