Mysuru district observes International Day against Drug Abuse, Illicit Trafficking

Mysuru: “India’s economic development is in a critical stage due to addictive drugs and other anti-social activities”, said Dr. Pushpa Amaranath President, Zilla Panchayat, Mysuru at the World Drugs Day Programme organized in city’s Central jail by District Administration in association with Zilla Panchayat and Women and Child welfare department, Mysuru on Friday.

“Youths are assets to the nation, unable to combat stress and insecurity within themselves is becoming victims to drugs, alcohol and other harmful activities. Curtailing this freedom must begin from home and schools. When the youths are carefully guided and supported this can be hindered. Let us swear to control our minds, strive for peace and create a healthy cooperative society”, said Dr. Pushpa Amaranath speaking on the conditions prevailing in India.

Speaking about the statistics, Srimathi K Radha, Deputy Director of Women and Child welfare department, Mysuru said, “Out of 1 billion people 3 millions are victims to addictions. Children aged between 12 and 18 are mostly falling prey and over 10 years in India around 25,000 addicts have died, which can further be analyzed as 2,500 deaths per year, 24 per month and 7 per day. 3% of total population lies under this category. Only by curtailing such trafficking India can be developed”.

Dr. Vijay later spoke about the medical impact of drugs on health. P V Anandareddy Mallikarjuna, Vasantha Kumar and Nagesh Bilwa were present.

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking – Awareness Rally

Meanwhile, expanding social responsibilities to protecting youths from drug addictions, hundreds of police personnel, nursing students and NCC cadets witnessed creating consciousness; they ignoring rains took part in an awareness rally to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Speaking after inaugurating the rally, the Commissioner of Police B Dayananda said that the police authority not only detect illicit activities but also extend responsibilities to protect youths from drug addictions. The police authority has immense social responsibility to prevent the issues, he added.

Addressing hundreds of participants, Doctor Anjali Arun from Apoorva Hospital, pointed out that according to recent study report, there are seven youths were causing to death everyday due to drug addictions in the country. We need more awareness programme to protect youths, she said.

Easy availability of financial support also promoting youths to indulge on bad addictions, however, it is individual choice to use the money whether for develop personality or spoiling it, she cautioned.
Meanwhile, she asserted that even though people do not want to come forward to de-addiction centre, it is responsibility of everyone to send the victims into de-addiction centres.

Lauding the police service, she said the traffic police have done fantastic job in Mysuru to creating awareness for eradicate drunk and drive.

MUDA Commissioner S Palaiah, District Surgeon Pashupathi were present, Nursing students fron JSS School of Nursing, Nataraja School of Nursing, BGS College of Nursing and NCC cadets were present.
