
Mysuru: The first music university in South India, Dr. Gangubhai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University, will be celebrating its third annual convocation at Nityotsava Convention Centre on Thursday, Feb 15 at 10.30am. Vidwan Umayalpuram K Sivaraman, internationally renowned Mridangam artiste, will deliver the convocation address.
Vajubhai R Vala, Governor and the Chancellor of the university will preside over the function and Basavaraja Rayareddy, Higher Education Minister will grace the occasion. Niranjan Vanalli, Registrar and R Rajesh, Registrar of Evaluation will also be present.
From 9 am to 9.30 am, the students, especially the alumnus, will be performing music by using 12 to 13 instruments.
The varsity will award degrees to 29 students which include 21 post graduation degree certificates to students. Eight students will receive gold medals for scoring high marks in their subjects and two students will receive cash awards, apart from four students getting ranks. Geetha Hebbar secured the first rank with overall 82 percent in Hindustani Vocal (PG) and also won two gold medals while Vijaya secured two gold medals in Karnatak music. BK Mamatha and KN Hemalatha secured a gold medal each in Hindustani Vocal and Karnatak Music respectively.
Though Geetha has a daughter who is just three and half years old, it didn’t deter her from excelling in the field in which she was interested from her childhood. She also appreciated the University for adding more value to the medal by making it out of real gold medal (1.25 gm) for the achievers. Each gold medal which she will be receiving during the convocation will have 1.25 gm gold. Last year the gold medals which were given were silver medals coated with gold.
Speaking to Newskarnataka Geetha said, “Really feeling happy with the achievement. I managed to achieve this feat with the support and encouragement of my husband and the teaching and non-teaching staff of the university. I want to pursue research in this subject”.
Graduation Certificates to sport Aadhaar card numbers: Sarvamangala Shankar, Vice Chancellor of the university said, “For the first time, based on instruction from UGC, we have put the Aadhaar card numbers of the students in all degree certificates. Apart from this, for security reason we have also come out with bar-coding.”
Music university to set up 13 more departments: To reach out to more people and especially to give more opportunities to music enthusiasts, Dr. Gangubhai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University from the coming academic year, will add on 13 more Departments to its existing seven Departments, said Sarvamangala Shankar.
R Rajesh, Registrar (Evaluation) said, “As of now we have 25 teaching staff and 26 non-teaching staff. We have requested the government to add 140 more teaching staff and 360 non-teaching staff. There are more than 400 students pursuing various courses at the university.
Gets Administrative approval: Music University gets administration approval for the construction of its own building at Hanchya Sathagalli, off the outer ring road near the VTU campus. After more than ten years the university, which had a lot of infrastructure problems currently functioning in a century old school building in Lakshmipuram, will come up in a Veena shape on an 8.40 acre land. “We have got Rs 27 crore approval from the administration and the government has sanctioned Rs 12 crore for the same,” said Sarvamangala.
