Mysuru: Elected representatives and officers from the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) seem to have realized that automation is the best way to clear tonnes of garbage that is being dumped at various treatment plants and waste segregation units in the city.

At an inspection of waste segregation units on Tuesday, reporters were told that a Japanese company had approached the MCC with a proposal where an advanced waste clearance machine could be installed in the city that can convert 200 tonnes of waste to fertilizer per day.

MLA M K Somashekar said that so far, waste segregation and dumping process were being done manually. “This would consume a lot of time and energy and would put a lot of pressure on treatment units. We are in talks with the Japanese people to install the machines at two places so that up to 400 tonnes of waste is converted to fertiliser,” he said and added that the cost and other factors to install the machine had to be worked out.

Inspecting the waste treatment unit in Zone 6 and 7 near the Jodi Thenginamara Road at Saraswathipuram, the MLA said that the unit gets 5 tonnes of garbage every day. “The city generates over 400 tonnes of garbage every day and most of the garbage is cleared and dumped at the Vidyaranyapuram waste segregation unit. We are now thinking of dividing the work and shift many operations to other units including Kesare and Rayanakere units,” he said.
