Mandya: Ranjitha, mother of actress Ramya is understood to have hinted at quitting Congress to fight as an independent from Mandya Assembly constituency in the forthcoming elections.
“I joined Congress party in the 80’s by paying a membership fee of Rs 2 and toiled for over 3 decades for the party “, Ranjitha said in anguish adding,” The party let me down totally, despite taking part in door-to-door campaigns on innumerable occasions.”
Even daughter Ramya did not get her due in Congress and to make matters worse people within the party worked against her resulting in her defeat, said Ranjitha. All decisions have forced me to leave the party to contest as an independent, she said.
“If people bless, I will continue to serve as I cannot let down voters who supported Ramya. Since Ambarish is contesting from Mandya, I decided against seeking Congress ticket”, Ranjitha is understood to have said. A final decision will be taken after consulting supporters, she added.
Reacting on the development, District women congress president Anjana Srikanth said, “Apart from campaigning for her daughter, Ranjitha stayed away from local politics. We were not aware that she desired responsibilty in the party and will talk to her”.
It may be recalled that Ranjitha’s daughter Divya Spandana, professionally known as Ramya joined Congress in 2012 as a member of its youth wing; she later won a 2013 by-election to become a Member of Parliament for Mandya constituency, but was defeated in general elections the following year. She is the head of Congress’ digital media team now.
