Mandya: The 50-year-old wounded wild elephant, Sidda died after a long battle for life here on December 9 at a camp near Manchanabele Dam site where he was being treated by the doctors.
The Forest Department had erected a pandal to shield the elephant from the scorching sun. It was being treated from the last three months by veterinarians, wildlife volunteers along with forest department officials from Kerala and Guwahati and provided with energy-rich supplements. Drips were administered to Sidda at least 30 times.
Earlier Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology B Ramanath Rai and former MP Ramya had called upon Deputy Conservator of Forest D Manjunath to take measures for the tusker’s recovery.
The condition of the wild elephant was still critical but was showing slight signs of improvement. However, on Thursday, Sidda succumbed. It may be recalled that the pachyderm had injured its leg near a stone quarry after it had strayed out of forest and found with multiple injuries. Sidda will be buried near the dam site where it had taken shelter, according to the officials.
