Madikeri: All hurdles to convert the residence of General Thimmaiah, ‘Sunny side’ into a memorial were removed after the Regional Trasnport commissioner M K Aiyappa on behalf of state transport department handed over land documents to the Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu Dr.Richard Vincent D’Souza.
The state government had approved converting General Thimmiah’s residence into a memorial in 2006-07 and had allocated funds for the purpose. However, the region transport office was functioning in the residential premises that time. They had to evacuate the premises for the memorial to come up.
The regional transport commissioner handed over the title deeds of land measuring 2.4 cares to the DC of Kodagu and wished success for the memorial project. The transport department had vacated the premises few years ago after it moved to Abbey falls area and only paper work was pending relating to handing over the property which housed the office as well as 7 employee quarters. The area surrounding ‘Sunny Side’ including the quarters has been handed over to the state department of Kannada and Culture.
‘Sunny Side’, residential premises of late General Thimmaiah will be renovated with few structural changes to accommodate battle tanks, fighter plane, statue, war memorial, garden and parking lot. Official documents, medals, trophies and other relevant data of his era will be kept inside the memorial for people to get a glimpse into the life, service and sacrifice of the late Army General from Kodagu.
