Madikeri: CNC is planning ‘Delhi Chalo’ on November 1 and has submitted a memorandum to the Government of India with a list of ten demands. CNC also plans to observe November 1 as Black day in front of Jantar Mantar in Parliament Street in New Delhi to intensify their demands for a separate Codava land.
During a press briefing in Madikeri on September 17, President of Codava National Council (CNC) NU Nachappa briefed journalists present about their demands. They include:
1. Permanent political package for codavas with union territory recognition.
2. Recognition of autonomous codava land under 6th schedule of constitution.
3. Incorporation of martial codava tribes under articles 340 and 342 of Indian constitution.
4. Inclusion of codava language in the 8th schedule of constitution.
5. The provisions of article 371 of our Constitution with inner line permit should be made applicable to Kodagu region, like in North eastern states.
6. Reservation/Nomination for codavas in National and state legislature bodies to bring them in par with Anglo Indian community.
7. Under Indian arms act Provision to possess and carry fire arms with no hindrance to codavas including jamma land holders.
8. Formataion of codava development board, similar to Hyderbad – Karantaka development board.
9. Memorial in honour of codavas at Devatt paramb, died during masscare by Tippu Sultan’s army.
10. Global recognition for codvas on par with Jews, Parsis, Yezidi, Baluch, Kurdi and Pashtun tribes.
Copies of memorandum were sent to the President of India, Prime minister of India, UN general Secretary, and Director General of UNESCO and UNHRC head quarters in Geneva. Copies were also sent to concerned ministers of the Union government.
CNC has been organising Delhi Chalo for the last 20 years pressing implementation of their demands.
