Madikeri: Director General and Inspector General (DG&IG) of police Nilamani N Raju on August 24, informed that as many as 10 people have died and at least nine people have gone missing following heavy rain and flooding in Kodagu.
Speaking to media here, the DGP said that five people out of the nine who are missing, are feared dead and the police have intensified the search operations for their mortal remains.
On August 15, Ammavva Beliyappa (79) died when she came in contact with high tension electric wire. M M Venkatramana (49), a farmer by profession, Yashwant, a police constable of KSRP and Pawan Achaiah (36) died due to a massive landslide.
On August 18, a three-week baby of Paniya, a resident of Mokkodlu Village died after their house collapsed due to the heavy rain. Basappa (56), a resident of Jodupala in Sullia Taluk and his daughter Monisha (24) died after they were washed away in heavy currents of Payaswini River.
On August 15, Chandravathi Rai, a resident of Hemmethala Village(66) and Umesh Rai (36) died due to the landslide. Their bodies were exhumed on August 22. The mortal remains of Ummavva Bidappa (76), a resident of Hebbetagiri were traced on August 23.
The people who went missing are Gilbert Mendonsa (59) of Katakeri, Chendrappa (59) of Hebbattageri, Harish Kumar (42) of Hebbale, Sabu Uthappa (62) of Moovathiklu, Francis (47) of Hadigeri, O K Babu (56) of Makkandooru, Gauramma (53) of Jodupala, Manjula (15) of Jodupala and Gagan Ganapathi (7) of Kalooru.
