Mysore: With all the 12 major dams and reservoirs in the southern part of the state inching towards their full capacity, the river Cauvery is filling up the KRS reservoir faster than last year, with a total inflow of 42,000 cusecs for the last three days.
“We have already sounded a flood alarm in the lower riparian course of Cauvery. The warning comes in the wake of the copious water we are receiving at KRS. People have been asked to take all safety measures, including their livestock and other movable property and their own lives on both banks of the river,” said Vijaykumar, the executive engineer of the irrigation department, KRS division.
The excess water will be channeled into the river, that passes through Srirangapatnam, Bannur, T Narsipur, Mahadevapura and finally into Tamil Nadu at a place called Biligondlu, where the river gauge of Karnataka state is established to measure the volume of water that flows out of the state into Tamil Nadu.
“We are likely to release excess water from the KRS reservoir from late evening on Tuesday. We are not sure of the volume of water that will be let out yet. It all depends on the inflow into the reservoir at that point of time,” Vijaykumar said.
The Deputy Commisioner BN. Krishnaya said since there is a rise in waterlevels of Cauvery river , visitors are requested not to enter water in these trourists spots like Balamuri, Nimishamba ,Pashimavahini, Sangam, Gosaigath, Ranganttitu and Bharachukki.
