Mysuru: Under the Human Rights Act, everyone is entitled to right to life, freedom, dignity and equality. If any one of the rights are violated, it can be questioned in the Supreme Court said Member of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, Chandrashekar G Hungund.

Speaking after inaugurating a seminar on Human Rights organised by the Karnataka Police Academy at its premise here on Saturday, he said, “In the name of development human rights cannot be compromised. Human rights violations are seen across the world and there are debates and seminars on its protection”.

Justice Hungund cited KRS Dam construction among many other examples where human rights were violated. He said that those from whom the land was acquired were yet to get compensation. He pointed that many people through political influences had received more compensation against their lands while most of the people still waited for justice. He called upon police officials to protect human rights, especially the dignity of the people, during the process of interrogation or any other part of inquiry.

‘There are Capable Candidates’

Justice Hungund said that Justice S R Bannurmath was the able candidate head State Human Rights Commission but the government here ignored him. However, the Maharashtra government after understanding Bannurmath’s capability appointed him as the chairperson of Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission, he added.
