Madikeri: Rajaseat, one of the main picturesque spots of Kodagu, is all decked up for a three-day flower and fruit show to be held from today.
In view of the model code of conduct in force, the annual show is conducted without much fanfare. Around 4000 varieties of flowers are displayed in pots, while another 10,000 plants of different kinds of flowers too have been planted.
Cinderella sculpture from anthurium flowers, a mantap by banana stems, vegetable carvings and sand sculpture are other attractions of the show. The Rajaseat mantap is decorated with various flowers and bonsai plants.
History of Rajaseat
Rajaseat, once, was the crematorium of the British. It is said that the coffins were later transferred to some other place and the area was developed as a beautiful garden.
The genesis of name is also quite interesting. During the rule of Chikkaveeraraja, the king along with the queen would visit the place in the evening. They would relax by savouring the sunset. The place where Raja would relax was later came to be known as Rajaseat. The British built a structure of four arches using cement and tiles which, today, is called mantap.
