Mysuru: The entire Cauvery basin farmers are worried as most dams are half-full with deficient rainfall during monsoon. Except Harangi dam which has less water storage capacity, the picture in Krishnaraja Sagar and Hemavthi reservoirs looks grim with water levels unlikely to increase in the near future.

The picture at Kabini reservoir located in Beechanahalli in HD Kote taluk is no different. The water used to overflow every time in the past but this year the scenario is very different. For water levels to increase in the dam, neighboring Wayanad district in Kerala should receive extensive rainfall. In 2013 though the dam water dried during summer, incessant rainfall during monsoon changed the whole situation and dam was filled to the brim. This year there is little hope among farmers in the area as water levels are not increasing and they are a worried lot.

The farmers were expecting good rainfall this year as they faced water shortage last year but the situation is no different. With monsoon period drawing to a close farmer’s are clueless about their future with agricultural activities moving at snail pace.

In 2013 the dam site was looking like an archeological site with temples and villages submerged earlier becoming visible. The dry region in the dam site looked drought prone with cracks showing up on the surface.

Farmers are hoping that the history does not repeat to make matters worse!
