Mysuru: “Environment is what mankind has been confronting for ages”, said, Prof. C Basavaraju, Registrar, University of Mysore at National Seminar on the Status of Geography in India at Maharaja Centenary Hall.

After inaugurating the programme he said, “protecting the environment is the most hectic challenge for mankind, we are facing our biggest challenge due to globalisation and its side effects. Nature is not friendly anymore. The exploding population has led to a great challenge, and man has to make optimum use of this. But with climate change, even small fluctuations can harm the livelihood of nations”.

The environment is to use, but not to abuse. Because of the unscientific activities of man, the environment is changing its structure in a short span of time, he addded

“Environment is the most important element in our atmosphere and we all have to be responsible for protecting it. Whatever the economic purposes may be, we must treat the environment gently”, he said,

“The concept of sustainable development is not limited to economic growth but it also deals with environment protection.  Mankind cannot live without the environment”, he added.

Retired Professor of Geography Maharani College Ranganath, Principal of Maharaja College Prof. B Nagaraju and HOD of Geography Dr. V Ashwathnarayan and students of geography were present at the seminar.
