Mysore: In a tragic incident, an engineering student, who had gone for a swim along with his friends to Varuna Canal near Bannur Road, was drowned after he slipped and fell into the canal.

The unfortunate student has been identified as Madhusudan (20), son of Mayananda, a resident of Nelamangala and a 3rd semester engineering student at Vidya Vikas Institute of Engineering & Technology (VVIET) in city.

It is reported that Madhusudan along with 10 of his friends went to the Varuna Canal near Bannur Road at about 1.30 pm yesterday for a swim.

Madhusudan, who tried to venture into the water, slipped and fell into the water and was swept away by the strong current of the water.

Mysore South SI Mahesh and staff, who rushed to the spot on receiving information, tried to retrieve the body of Madusudan but in vain as it was getting dark and the search operation was suspended.

The Police, on Saturday, summoned expert swimmers and divers to fish out the body besides summoning Fire Brigade personnel to the search operation.
