Mysuru: Film is an amalgamation of all the arts. But since its inception, film has been closely associated with money and this is affecting society and filmmaking opined Eminent Kannada Film Director P Sheshadri here on Saturday.

He was speaking after inaugurating a seminar on “Cinema and Society” organised by University with Potential for excellence Focus Area II and Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Rani Bahadur auditorium.

Addressing the gathering he said that Cinema which has a history of 118 years has become a part of everyone’s life. It is the total outcome of all art. But what differentiates it with all other art is the lot of money involved in it. When we talk of a cinema we talk in terms of crores and that has given it a shape of an Industry and people tend to make money. This aspect also gave birth to different facets of making cinema. It is obvious that when you invest such money you need to draw it back. In the process the cinema started to grow big and now it has proved to be greater than life to all of us.

Further he said that the cinema gets inspiration from society. It depicts the real life in a reel world. It creates a kind of illusion among the public and through it becomes close to the society to such an extent that has made cinema as the most powerful means compared to all other media.

The gravity of cinema is such that the recent Maggi issue has proved dangerous to the celebrities where they are in the threat to go jail. Contrast to this, there is another kind of development that is taking place is the Producers strike. This development does not prove to be good to cinema and also to society.

Cinema today is stuck with the stigma of “woods”. Sandalwood influenced by Bollywood and Bollywood by Hollywood. This influence must be in a positive manner and with limited restriction. With all this money, stigma and influence involved Cinema is on the routes of threat. If the potential of cinema is used to the full, it can create a healthy society.

Eminent Kannada Film Director and Producer Nagendra Sha, Registrar University of Mysore Prof C Basavaraju, Professor and Chief Coordinator UGC UPE Focus Area II N Usharani, Chairman Department of Mass Communication and Journalism Dr C K Puttaswamy, Professor N Mamatha were present.
