Chamarajanagar: Villagers exposed the extent of corruption in rural development when they peeled the surface course of the newly laid road with bare hands in Yadavanahalli village of the district.

Zilla panchayath had allotted Rs 10 Lakhs for road development works. The contractor concerned completed the works on July 30 and washed his hands. He promptly claimed Rs 10 Lakh towards the works carried out and on the surface everything looked fine with “powder” covering after laying the surface course.

The poor quality of works got exposed when lumps were observed at many places and the uneven surface started showing cracks at several places. Yadavanahalli villagers were able to extract heaps of road material to expose the poor quality of works.

They started cursing the people responsible for misusing public money and insisted on the presence of engineer Ravi Kumar. Under pressure, engineer Ravikumar visited the area and observed lapses which shocked the gathering. He instructed the contractor to rectify the anomalies and left the scene.

In reality, however, the future remains uncertain.
