Mysuru: Dr. Sunil Bhat treated an eight-year-old boy from Mysore recently who suffered from Aplastic Anemia, a life threatening disease where bone marrow fails to produce blood cells. The patient was undergoing blood transfusions on a monthly basis and was not responding to any medicines. Dr. Sunil Bhat investigated the case, and decided that the patient required a Bone Marrow Transplant. The patient’s family was tested for matching bone marrow and his sister was found to be a complete match. The boy Shabhu, underwent Bone Marrow Transplant at Narayana Health City, Bangalore and is now cured.

Talking about the case of the eight-year-old boy, Dr. Sunil Bhat – Consultant and Head of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant at Narayana Health City, Bangalore said, “There have been a lot of advancements in treatment of cancers and other life threatening blood disorders and Bone Marrow Transplants has been revolutionary in treating most of these. He further added, “As per recent data, childhood cancer contributes to less than 5% of the total cancer burden in India, with approximately 45,000 children diagnosed with cancer every year. What is encouraging is that 75 to 80% of cancers in children can be cured if appropriate treatment is given”
