Mysore : She, despite being an acid attack victim, has turned into a popular medical officer in Mysore. Besides treating over five dozen patients every day, she also helps women in distress. Y N Mahalakshmi was attacked with acid by Chkkabasavaiah, a property owner, after she complained to police against him in January 2001. Since then, her life has been challenging.

She got justice 11 years after the incident. She is now planning to move Supreme Court, seeking enhancement of punishment.
Chikkabasavaiah was sentenced to three-year jail in January 2012. “Now, the SC has amended the laws with regard to acid attacks – it has fixed a minimum of 10 years rigorous jail term,” she said.

Mahalakshmi, now a doctor, sank into depression after the acid attack, which left her with only one eye and an ear and a disfigured face. She was aged 26 then, and had a four-year-old child. Unlike other victims, Mahalakshmi didn’t lose hope. She mustered courage to fight against injustice. She underwent over 25 corrective surgeries over the years.

A year after the incident, she took up a government job as medical officer in the health department. Now she wants to realize her daughter Anaghas dream  of becoming a civil servant. Dr Mahalakshmi claims that she guides women who seek her help. Recently, she helped a rape victim in legal matters.”I welcome Supreme Court decision of directing state governments to restrict the sale of acid,” she says.
