226 Grama Panchayats go to the polls on 29th May

Mysuru: With the  addition of 33 new Gram Panchayats (GP) in Mysuru district, and for the first time more than 50 percent of reservation for women,  the elections to these Grama Panchayats  will be held on 29 May.

Addressing to media persons here on Monday, deputy commissioner C Shikha said, “the elections of 266 GPs in the district will be held on 31st May from 7 am to 5 pm. A total of 1,39,2179 (male 710101 and female 682078) voters will be casting their votes. There will be 1914 voting booths in the district and 364 booths have been identified as high sensitive booths and 560 have been noted as sensitive booths. Elections will be held according to the 1993 Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act.”

A total of 4744 seats (general- 2301 and female 2443) will be available to contest in 1848 GP constituencies.

A total 266 electoral officers and 293 assistant electoral officers have been deputed to conduct the elections. 8424 election officials will also be working along the above team.

 The elections this time has two important features —compulsory voting and the 50 per cent of reservation of seats for women. As per the information available, the share of seats reserved for women in GPs in the State is more than 50 per cent in almost all taluks.

The code of conduct of the elections has been implemented in the district from Sunday (May 10 and will be taken back on 7 June. The code of conduct will not be implemented in Corporation limits. During the code of conduct, the GPs and Zilla Panchayats can organize general meetings but should not implement new plans or programmes.

Superintendent of police Abhinav Khare speaking about the security measures said, “We have requested to allot 2900 additional police officials during the elections and will be using the district police officials for it. As the elections will be held in two phases, the district officials will also work in other phase.”

Meanwhile, on the first day at various GPs, Candidates filed nominations along with their supporters at several places in the district.

No EVM machines

Meanwhile, district administration confirmed that the electoral ballots will be used and, EVM machnes will not be used in the elections.
