Chikkamagaluru: The Criminal Investigation Department sleuths who visited the house of DySP Kallappa Handibag in Chikkamagaluru were rather shocked to see the plight in which Kallappa lived.

The inventory prepared by the sleuths who visited the police quarters of Kallappa after obtaining a search warrant shows that the DySP’s life was devoid of luxury.

An acacia sofa set, two plastic chairs, a cot, an almirah, a pram and cycle for his son, a moped used by his wife and some household articles were some of the ‘assets’ that were seen at his house.

(DySP) Kallappa Handibag had committed suicide after his name surfaced in a kidnapping case. Handibag was accused of collecting Rs 10 lakh ransom in the case on June 28.

The team led by DySP Dharnesh could not find anything noteworthy in the house, say the sources, who also add that the team was shocked to see the simple lifestyle led by Kallappa’s family.

“Kallappa’s mother-in-law had recently gifted a fridge and washing machine, while an LED TV was bought on monthly installments Whenever she (mother-in-aw) visited her daughter, she gave her Rs 5,000 for her expenses.Though she made a joke of it, she was equally proud of her son-in-law’s honesty,” Kallappa’s neighbours and quoted in Deccan Herald.

Handibag, who had a penchant for literature, had in his collection S Hussain Zaidi’s book ‘Dongri To Dubai: Six Decades of The Mumbai Mafia’, another on the legal system by retired DGP D V Guruprasad, ‘Baduku Kaliyiri’ by Swami Jagadatmananda, besides those by Kuvempu and Poornachandra Tejaswi. When investigators were looking at the books, Handibag’s brothers-in-law Vijay and Praveen (Vidya’s brothers) said, “They are the only assets our brother-in-law left for his wife and kid.”

Father files complaint against SP

Meanwhile, Kallappa Handibag’s father Basappa Handibag lodged a complaint against Chikkamagaluru SP Santosh Babu, accusing him of mental torture which drove the DySP to suicide. He filed the complaint at Harugeri police station in Belagavi district stating that the SP’s repeated mental torture and abusive words led Kallappa to take the extreme step.

The complaint was transferred to the CID by SP BR Ravikanthe Gowda.
