Chikkamagaluru: Charmadi Ghat in itself beholds some of the breathtakingly beautiful spots, but in its very same arms it embraces some of the most precarious pockets of steep gorges which have become safe haven for criminals to do away with the evidences of crime.

The beautiful Charmadi Ghat provides connectivity between Chikkamagaluru and Dakshina Kannada. While the people enjoy the clean and fresh breeze and the lush green, serene surroundings as their vehicles cruise through serpentine road, there is an ugly truth attached to the region.

This is the same region which hides in its wombs secrets of several mysterious murders. As per sources, dead bodies of several victims of murders have been disposed off clandestinely in these precarious gorges, so as to leave behind no evidences.

Since a lot of pilgrims take Charmadi route to reach Dharmasthala, several police check posts have been put up in the region. Despite this, the culprits have been conveniently disposing off dead bodies here.

In Banakal police station limits, two dead bodies were thrown away three years ago. Though the bodies were spotted co-incidentally, the identity of the two dead bodies have not been established yet, which means if they were murdered and their bodies have been disposed off here, their murderers must be roaming out in the open. Couple of days ago, a dead body of a lady too was found disposed here. The probe is going on to ascertain the identity of the lady.

Locals say that while a few dead bodies were found, there might have been so many cases which must have gone unseen. The frightened locals have been looking at the police for help so as to avoid Charmadi being converted into an illegal crematorium.
