The police booked Lakshmi and Athira, both natives of Kerala, and Krishna, Shilpa and Joe of Al Qamar College after Aswathi named them in her statement that was recorded at the hospital on Wednesday.

“The charges include attempt to murder, besides sections of the Kerala Ragging Act and Atrocities under SC ST Act,” Kozhikode circle inspector Jaleel Thotathil said.

Since the crime happened in Karnataka, Aswathi’s recorded statement has been sent through a special messenger to the Roza police station in Kalaburagi, Thothathil added. Also, a copy of the FIR has been sent to the Kalaburagi police commissioner.

Sources say, Kalaburagi SP N Shashikumar has formed a 13-member team led by DSP Jahnavi to probe the case.

The victim, Aswathi (19), hailing from Mallapuram in Kerala, is battling for her life at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (KMCH) after seniors allegedly forced her to drink toilet cleaning solution on May 9.
