Raichur: A man along with his two accomplices, were arrested on Tuesday July 9, by the city police for a failed attempt to cheat in-charge Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Jyothsna.

It is learnt that one of them posed as an IAS officer and made fake promises to people by collecting money from youths, promising them jobs. The police have confiscated Rs 15 lakh hidden in a shoe box, from them.

According to police sources, the Deputy Commissioner’s office received a fax from New Delhi on July 5. The fax stated that Kabir Hashmi, IAS, Deputy Secretary to Sports Authority of India, would be visiting Nehru Yuva Kendra and necessary cooperation was to be given to him.

On Monday, Kabir Hashmi and his Personal Assistant Sarvesh Kumar met Vijaya Jyothsna at her office and explained his acquaintance with other IAS officers. He mentioned the name of Rashmi, an IAS officer in Tamil Nadu, saying that she had worked under him at the Centre. However, Hashmi’s approach and body language created suspicion.

Jyothsna immediately contacted Rashmi, who confirmed that she had never worked in New Delhi and Kabir Hashmi’s name appears nowhere in the 2007 batch of IAS officers.

Jyothsna informed the Sadar Bazar police, who immediately arrested Kabir alias Syed Anwar Hashmi and Sarvesh Kumar, both from Delhi, and Obedullah, a resident of Raichur.

Later the interrogation revealed that the trio had been cheating unemployed youths by promising jobs and collecting money from them.

The police are investigating the case.
