Hubballi: Even after 700 plus days of struggle nothing has been achieved in Mahadayi water sharing issue. At this juncture Janata Dal D (S) plans to give a fillip to the agitation by holding day-and-night dharna at Naviluteertha and Kanakumbi in Belagavi district.

The proposed day-and-night dharna will be held at Naviluteerth and Kanakumbi on July 11 and 19, respectively, Janata Dal (S) leader and Navalgund MLA N H Konaraddi said.

Speaking to reporters in Hubballi, Konaraddi said, “While Kanakumbi is Mahadayi’s birth place, the Malaprabha reservoir at Naviluteertha near Savadatti in Belagavi district is the place where water is stored and supplied for drinking and irrigation purpose of the region.

Though the Malaprabha reservoir was built at Naviluteertha to meet the drinking water needs and for irrigation purpose in the region, the purpose was less achieved following lack of adequate flow into the reservoir.

“The Kalasa Banduri project is basically aimed at drawing water to the Malaprabha through the Kalasa Banduri and other streams so that the reservoir has enough inflow. The agitation is to highlight the need for political intervention to resolve the issue permanently,” he said.

Hundreds of farmers from 13 taluks in the Malaprabha command area would take part in the agitations along with the JD (S) leaders and office-bearers, he said adding that while BJP MPs of the State have stopped speaking about the issue after the party came to power in Goa, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah too had failed to exert pressure on the Centre and the Tribunal to get the issue resolved at the earliest.
